The Jobs Summit clearly highlighted the importance of supporting women’s economic and societal outcomes; despite being better educated and living longer, women have yet to close the gap to men in terms of their labour market outcomes, earnings and careers. They are also still disproportionately vulnerable to domestic violence, and can still face unsafe work environments.

This year the Australasian Teaching Economics Conference (ATEC22) will be hosted by the Australian National University from July 14-15 2022. In early 2022, NSW WEN announced a writing competition to empower female voices in economics. The competition is part of the Credible Economist blog series.
WEN received a competitive array of entries covering a wide range of topics. After a rigorous and difficult judging process, the judges selected the top 3 blogs and 3 honourable mentions from the entry list.

The energy transition is changing the nature of the whole value chain of electricity markets. Low- or no-carbon new generation technologies are dominated by fixed costs and have near-zero variable costs, while distributed technologies put more control in the hands of households who are less sophisticated and whose actions are less easily directed by market operators.

The newly released report (available here) has found that nearly a quarter of permanent skilled migrants in Australia are working in a job beneath their skill level. The NSW WEN invites you to attend a virtual panel event discussing the NSW Government's Women's Economic Opportunities Review. In February 2022, the NSW Government announced a landmark review on women's economic opportunities. The Review focuses on supporting women to enter, re-enter and stay in the workforce, drawing on the results of the 2021-222 NSW Intergenerational Report which found that the economy would be eight per cent larger if women's participation reached parity with men.

Women’s under-representation in economics: Exploring the “confidence gap”
RBA research has found that female students, as well as students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, are falling in number in Australian schools’ economics classrooms. These student cohorts are also more likely to report a poor understanding of economics and have less confidence in their own proficiency in the subject.

NSW WEN recently announced the inaugural writing competition as part of the Credible Economist series. Selected articles that best fit the evaluation criteria will receive prizes of up to $750. Submissions close on 1 April 2022.
