The Economic Society of Australia (Qld), in association with Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Griffith University, and The University of Queensland invite you to participate in the 2017 Queensland Economics Winter School at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in the Gold Coast hinterland from 7 to 9 June 2017.
Evaluating Public Policy – natural experiments and empirical techniques
One focus of empirical economics has always been to evaluate the effectiveness of public policy. Policy evaluation has become even more important as understanding has grown of the complex response of individuals to incentives and information. The Winter School will explore the application of economics to public policy and how natural experiments can be used to analyse the impact of policy. Different strategies and approaches will be discussed using examples of research ranging from education, labour markets (both minimum wages and discrimination) and crime. Please see the link for a preliminary program 2017 Winter School preliminary program
Lead presenter: Stephen Machin, Professor of Economics, London School of Economics and Director, Centre for Economic Performance
Stephen Machin is a leading researcher in the field of evaluation of public policy in relation to labour market , education and crime, and their effect on the labour market programs and empirical analysis of educational policies (such as school governance and teaching techniques) and their outcomes. He is Director of the Centre for Economic Performance at LSE and also leads the Centre’s Labour Markets research program - see http://cep.lse.ac.uk/_new/staff/person.asp?id=971 .
