Dr Veronika Nemes (PhD (Econ), MScBA, BEcon) has over 22 years experience in market design, policy, and regulation that spans across consulting, government, and academia. Dr Nemes has worked across many industries, with most of her work focusing on electricity and gas markets in the last decade.
Dr Nemes combines market expertise with deep insights into economic theory and auction design to help clients meet their objectives. Dr Nemes has applied her knowledge in many contexts, including electricity, gas, water, and environmental markets as well as public sector allocation mechanisms for mobile spectrum, aquaculture, taxi licences, gaming machine entitlements, biodiversity offsets, and transport services. Dr Nemes has extensive experience in both physical and financial markets, and various auction types including simple English through to complex combinatorial (package) auctions, and simultaneous multi-round auctions (SMRA) commonly used in frequency spectrum allocations around the world.
Dr Nemes was a Director at the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) and in that capacity she completed various rule changes and reviews of the Australian electricity and gas markets. Prior to joining the AEMC, Dr Nemes held various senior positions within the Victoria Government and has provided advice in relation market design and policy issues relating to renewable energy and climate change. Dr Nemes was a member of the expert panel tasked to design an auction for allocating emissions permits for the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).
As a consultant in the financial services area for Accenture, Dr Nemes implemented and tested electronic trading applications for clients in the financial services industry such as the European Energy Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade.
Dr Nemes holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Melbourne University where she is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Economics, and a Senior Associate at the Centre for Market Design. Dr Nemes has published articles in leading economics journals in the areas of market-based policy instruments and testing markets using experimental economics.
