Dr Elcin Tuzel is a research fellow and health economist at the Centre for the Business and Economics of Health (CBEH) at the University of Queensland. Her research uses applied econometric methods to evaluate health and education policies, particularly focusing on primary healthcare delivery, workforce planning, and mental health and wellbeing.
Elcin's work explores the impact of institutional design, governance and policy interventions on health outcomes and service efficiency. As a Chief Investigator and research lead on numerous interdisciplinary projects funded by national and university-level grants, she has examined issues such as optimising the primary care workforce, governance models in rural and remote healthcare, and the economics of mental health and wellbeing.
Prior to joining academia, Elcin worked as an economist at the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) and with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Programme. She holds a PhD and an advanced master's degree in economics from the University of Queensland, an MSc in economics from the University of Warwick and a BA in economics from Ankara University.
An active member of the Australian Health Economics Society (AHES), she convenes the AHES Mental Health Special Interest Group and serves as an editor of the AHES newsletter. She is also a certified mental health first aider and a strong advocate for integrating mental health considerations into economic and policy research.
